Style on a Budget: Cosmetic Cases Pull Double Duty

by Bridget on November 19, 2008

One of the best handbag tips I’ve ever gotten is to think outside the box when it comes to cosmetic cases.  Who says that’s all they can be?  They also make great clutches, both for day and night.  They are generally lined, just like your normal handbag would be and often include more inside pockets than a clutch, which come in handy for credit cards, money, your phone, or whatever else you want to keep separate.  The best part is that you can get a cosmetic case with a designer label often at a fraction of the cost of a clutch from the same brand.

This option is also perfect when traveling.  Pack your cosmetics in a case during travel; once you arrive at your destination, pull those out, toss in your phone, money and lip gloss, and you’re ready to go.  It helps save suitcase space and gives you another style option on the road.

One of my favorites this season is the Coach Amanda Satin Large Cosmetic Case.  It comes in a few rich jewel tones that are the perfect pop of color to go with a Little Black Dress at holiday parties.  It has an inside pocket and is big enough to fit all the necessities for a night out.  With an $88 price tag, it’s less than a 1/3 the price of the foldover clutch in the same “Amanda” line at $298.

What a great idea! I never thought of using a makeup bag as a clutch. I love the jewel tone of this bag, too, it really pops.

BagLady – It’s definitely not something you can do with every makeup bag, but with a lot of the designer makeup bags, they are so similar to the larger handbags (often just smaller versions) that no one would even know the difference. And it’s so budget-friendly that it’s always worth the extra time to check them out!

I received an especially beautiful Longchamp cosmetic bag as a gift – now I’ll use it occasionally as a clutch – great idea!

Eileen – I’m glad you were able to find a new use for a great Longchamp bag!
